7 Things No One Tells You About the Gondogoro La

The Gondogoro La is the wild card of the K2 circuit: a 5,650m pass that turns a great trek into a serious mountain journey. After a hundred crossings, here is what our guides wish every trekker knew.

1. The day starts at midnight

Summit-day logic applies: you leave Ali Camp around 1am to cross the snow slopes while they are frozen and stable, and to be off the far side before the afternoon sun loosens the rocks.

2. The ropes are real — and so is the exposure

Fixed lines protect the steepest 300 metres on both sides. You do not need climbing experience, but you do need a harness, a jumar and the composure to use them at altitude in the dark.

3. The view is worth every step

From the crest, K2, Broad Peak and both Gasherbrums stand in a single line-up — the finest single viewpoint in the Karakoram, and one that only pass-crossers ever earn.

Train for it, respect it, and the Gondogoro La will give you the greatest morning of your trekking life.
